Chrysler set to kill Compass and Town & Country

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
The Jeep Compass and Chrysler Town & Country will cease to exist in 2014, Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne announced. The Town & Country will actually be replaced by a smaller crossover-type vehicle.

The changes are part of a long effort by Marchionne to give each Chrysler Group brand a more distinct identity and save a considerable amount of money by eliminating product overlaps.

More than 90% of the automaker's dealerships now sell all four volume brands - Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram - making brand identity a crucial strategic element.

Under its sheetmetal, the Compass is basically identical to the Jeep Patriot, while the Town & Country is nothing more than a premium version of the Dodge Grand Caravan. The replacement crossover may retain the Town & Country name, however.

While Marchionne has axed a number of vehicles since taking over in 2009, he has also added three separate brands to the North American landscape including Ram, Fiat, and SRT.

In other news, the CEO reaffirmed that an electric version of the Fiat 500 subcompact is heading to our shores later this year even though Chrysler "will lose money on every car we make."

F1: Sebastian Vettel denies signing Ferrari deal

From GMM

Sebastian Vettel has denied reports he has signed a 'pre-contract' to move to Ferrari in 2014.

Two British Sunday newspapers reported the rumour just ahead of the Monaco grand prix.

"Maybe they needed to fill up some space in their newspapers," the reigning world champion, who remains under contract to Red Bull for the foreseeable future, told the Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung in Monaco.

"I have signed nothing," the 24-year-old German insisted.

As for why he was the only missing team member when Red Bull celebrated Mark Webber's Monaco victory by leaping into Red Bull's harbour pool, Vettel answered: "I didn't want a swim.

"And I didn't have any spare clothes," he smiled wryly.

Sebastian Vettel finished fourth, losing his championship lead to Ferrari's Fernando Alonso.

2013 Mercedes-Benz G-Class First Impressions

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
LA CLUSAZ, France - Snow-capped peaks frame a valley that could have sprung from the pages of one of Tolkien's fairy tales. One can easily believe that the tiny stone chalets nestled in the foothills might have once housed hobbits. Fat doe-eyed cattle graze the lush pasture, and the only sound you hear is the melodic ringing of cowbells.

2013 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Into this lovely pastoral setting we came, shattering the bucolic peacefulness like Tolkien's ravaging Smaug - turbos whistling like angry teakettles and every downshift punctuated by rude blatts from the twin side pipes.

The Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen (now there's a name that rolls trippingly off the tongue) is one of those over-the-top vehicles that you either don't get at all - or embrace wholeheartedly for its utter ridiculousness. And the one we're in, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG, has been fed a regimen of steroids.

Military roots
Originally designed for military use, the iconic G-wagen's 33-year legacy includes winning the 1983 Paris-Dakar Rally, the world's most gruelling off-road endurance race.

As far as hardcore off-roaders go, the G-Class is considered one of the best - a nearly indestructible bushwhacker instantly recognizable for its boxy upright shape. Yet it's rather unlikely that most will ever venture far from the pavement - the G-wagen being a niche favourite of the entitled set who probably has little interest in its formidable prowess, but plenty in its bragging rights.

And that recent cachet is a good thing - the death knell having come very close to sounding for the boxy ute more than once. Currently experiencing a surge in popularity with a double-digit growth in sales last year, the G-wagen returns with a modicum of enhanced style, yet the image that made it an icon remains relatively intact.

Powerful biturbo V8
Our beast, the G 63 AMG, boasts a twin-turbo, 5.5L V8 that puts out 544 bellowing horsepower with 560 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 7G-tronic automatic transmission, the G 63 has an official combined fuel rating of 13.0L/100km.

It also features a start/stop function while in C mode (for controlled efficiency). Switching the shift lever to Sport or Manual cancels the start/stop function, shortening the shifts and speeding up throttle response.

Butch exterior hides luxury inside
Its butch appearance boasts a little added bling with an LED strip under its distinctive round headlights and red callipers peeping through the spokes of its 20" rims. It's dressed in gunmetal grey, with that sexy matte finish that's been appearing throughout the brand's lineup. The front end is treated to an AMG makeover, with the characteristic chrome-trimmed, twin-blade grille, and an aggressive bumper with large air inlets.

Hardcore on the outside, the cabin treatment is pure, upscale Designo - because every off-roader needs quilted, butter yellow upholstery, right? It's complimented by carbon fibre trim and an enamel white centre stack. Despite its retro exterior, the G 63 boasts all the latest gadgetry: Mercedes-Benz's COMAND multimedia interface, large touchscreen, blind-spot warning and adaptive cruise control, just to name a few.

Driving Impressions
Leave it to the Germans to construct what looks like a giant Meccano track in the centre square of this quiet alpine village, to give us a taste of the unstoppable G-wagen in action.

With three electronically-controlled locking differentials, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz G-Class chugs effortlessly up the 45-degree inclines to the 3-storey summit of the rickety steel track like some chunky automotive version of the Terminator. Ludicrous, yet delightfully compelling, we're still giggling about it later when we set out to conquer the Alps.

It's no sports car, but the G-wagen handles the tight mountain roads with more composure than its top-heavy looks would suggest possible. The suspension and damper settings have reportedly been tuned for more "dynamic handling," although dynamics is a fairly relative term when you're talking about a slab-sided vehicle that probably displaces as much air as a small delivery truck.

2013 Mercedes-Benz G-Class front 3/4 view

Certainly, it felt taut for a ladder-framed vehicle, with no undue body roll on the rough and undulating route through the Rhone Alps.

The steering, however, is decidedly truck-like and requires some extra manoeuvring through the twisties.

Knock the shift lever into Sport mode and the engine note becomes almost obnoxiously intoxicating, bouncing off the stone walls of the tiny villages we passed through while sheepishly avoiding eye contact.

It's a head-turner - even the cows stopped grazing to gaze at us expressionlessly.

The G 63 AMG, and its more mild-mannered sibling, the 388-hp G 550, will be available in North America this August. As usual, the Europeans receive an even more outrageous version that we won't be able to get our hands on: a V12 G 65 AMG boasting 612 hp.

F1: Sebastian Vettel signs 2014 Ferrari pre-contract – reports

From GMM

Two British newspapers on Sunday reported an explosive rumour about F1's reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel.

The Independent, and the Sunday Times, separately said the Red Bull driver has signed a pre-contract to join Ferrari in 2014.

"Insiders are adamant that the German has signed an option with Ferrari for 2014, subject to competitive form from the Prancing Horse stable for the rest of 2012," said the Independent.

The Sunday Times agreed, adding that Vettel's current teammate Mark Webber could also be moving to Ferrari to replace Felipe Massa, but only for a single season in 2013.

Fernando Alonso's Ferrari contract runs until 2016.

"It is not known whether the Vettel option is binding on either side, but if there is a one-year Ferrari vacancy for 2013, it strengthens the case for Webber being the man to fill it," said the Times.

F1: Briatore admits working on alternate rules

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

Flavio Briatore could be central to F1's future.

The Italian, who was ousted and banned from the sport amid the 'crashgate' scandal a few years ago, was back in the paddock in Monaco on Friday.

He admitted he has been working on new regulations, with speculation suggesting they will be an alternative should F1's commercial rights holders split with the governing FIA.

"At the moment F1 is a hobby but I speak regularly with Bernie; there are even days when we speak two or three times," Briatore is quoted by the Spanish newspaper AS.

"I have proposed new regulations that would be good for all the teams, to increase the spectacle and, above all, reduce the costs."

He said success would be possible on a team budget of "(EUR) 100 million" per year.

"That's a hell of a lot of money," Briatore told German'ys Auto Motor und Sport.

On Monday, a high-powered meeting will take place in Monaco.

Present will be FIA president Jean Todt, Ecclestone and the teams, according to AMS.

The report said "most teams want the FIA to continue to write and control the rules".

"F1 needs a third perspective," Mercedes' Ross Brawn said.

Commented Red Bull's Christian Horner: "I see the potential for conflict.

"Bernie is worried about the show. The sound of the engines is a big part of it."

Part of the engine dispute is already in the public domain, with the FIA and the manufacturers pushing for the new turbo V6 to debut in 2014, and many of the small teams wanting a delay.

Ecclestone is also on the other side of another debate, as he would reportedly like to see established constructors Ferrari, Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes, Lotus and Williams supply customer cars to their smaller rivals.

It is a high stakes situation, with Briatore's 'GP1' idea potentially giving Ecclestone more control but probably losing the crucial names "formula one" and "world championship".

That would have value implications for the planned Singapore floatation.

"It would not be desirable if the FIA is no longer there," said Peter Sauber. "The big teams would just do what they want."

Force India's Otmar Szafnauer added: "It would be bad for our credibility if we didn't have an independent regulator."

Horner disagrees: "You could write your rules by committee with everyone involved and show them to the FIA to make sure they work, just like GP2."

Rally: Sébastien Loeb leads Acropolis rally after day 2

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
The fight for honours on the Acropolis Rally, round six of the WRC, remains finely balanced with Sebastien Loeb holding a narrow margin of 10.2s following a day of high drama in Greece.

From WRC.com

Overnight leader Loeb, in a Citroen DS3 WRC, had come under intense pressure from factory Ford pilot Jari-Matti Latvala, who narrowed the French driver's lead to one second only to suffer a slow puncture while 2.2s behind on stage 14. With Latvala and co-driver Miikka Anttila stopping to change the damaged wheel, Loeb and navigator Daniel Elena were left seemingly in the clear.

However, a determined effort from Latvala's Ford teammate Petter Solberg in increasingly slippery conditions caused by sporadic rain showers, means a fourth win of the season for Loeb is far from guaranteed heading into Sunday's five stages.

Behind Solberg, who could have been closer to Loeb had he not overshot a junction in the rain on stage 16, Mikko Hirvonen holds a distant third place in the second factory Citroen with Latvala down in fourth having lost further ground by completing three stages with only three brakes as a result of the damage caused by his puncture.

Mads Ostberg has fought back up to fifth in his Adapta Fiesta with Martin Prokop sixth. Both drivers benefited when a water pump failure led to Evgeny Novikov's exit on Saturday morning.

Thierry Neuville is seventh with Sebastien Ogier eighth despite tackling stage 15 without the aid of powersteering on his Volkswagen Motorsport Skoda Fabia Super 2000. Yazeed Al-Rajhi is a strong ninth in his Fiesta RRC.

Acropolis rally - Classification after day 2:

1. Loeb-Elena (Citroen DS3 Wrc) in 3h56min13.0s

Piloting a Citroen DS3 WRC alongside co-driver Daniel Elena, Loeb performed faultlessly to secure his 71st career victory after fending off a host of rivals. And by claiming three bonus points for winning the event-closing Power Stage, Loeb's lead of the WRC drivers' standings increases to 30 points with seven rounds remaining.

Petter Solberg started Sunday's five stages trailing Loeb by 10.2s only to crash out on the opening test in his Ford Fiesta RS WRC.

The Norwegian's misfortune - he tore a rear wheel off his car after striking a tree - promoted Loeb's teammate Mikko Hirvonen up to second with Jari-Matti Latvala securing the final podium place in third. The Finn marked his return from injury by claiming 10 fastest stage times.

Behind Latvala, Mads Ostberg moved into third overall in the WRC standings by finishing fourth. Martin Prokop and Thierry Neuville also continued their strong scoring runs in fifth and sixth respectively.

NASCAR: Brad Keselowski wins Charlotte Nationwide race on fuel run

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Brad Keselowski's fuel strategy to save gas won the day at the Charlotte Nationwide Series race.

Only Brad isn't telling how he stretched his gas mileage to 73 laps.

When asked how he held off Denny Hamlin's Toyota for the win he said "well, I can't tell you that," with a big toothy smile. "There's a strategy and you know, Penske Racing engines, they do a great job with fuel mileage on the Dodges and they deserve a lot of credit for it.

"There's only so much you can do as a driver and a lot of it comes down to the car and what it needs. Denny didn't let me save any. I can tell ya at the end he was running pretty hard and I knew he was going to be tough, both him and Kyle (Busch)."

It was Keselowski's 18th win in NASCAR's junior series.

Hamlin was not surprisingly disappointed: "It was a great battle back for us," Hamlin said.

"We were just struggling to get the motor running at end of the straightaway. I thought we had a carburetor problem. We fought the handling. We just didn't have that good of a car, but we were able to make something of it.

"I had used my stuff up so much trying to get back through the field. I wore out the right front right off it."

Ford driver, Ricky Stenhouse Jr, the points leader, had a broken driveshaft, causing a lengthy pit stop for a replacement and repair. He finished 26th - 21-laps behind the winner -, but still has a 13-point lead over Elliott Sadler, who finished fifth.

Austin Dillon, the highest ranked rookie who finished 11th, is third in the standings, 28 points behind Stenhouse, Jr.

Danica Patrick finished 13th, and X-Games Champion, Travis Pastrana 24th, five laps down of two spins.

Jolyon Palmer (iSport) takes victory in the second race presented in Monaco, after a multi car pile-up in the first lap.

Right after, race 1 winner Johnny Cecotto span at Massenet corner, which brought a massive accident behind him, involving ten cars, including championship leader Davide Valsecchi and his teammate Felipe Nasr, whose car was launched in the air, with no damage for the Brazilian driver.

Calado, who stayed on track in second position after the first corner incident, was forced to stop to fix a broken front wing.

Max Chilton moved up to second, and finally crossed the finish line only one second behind his fellow countryman Jolyon Palmer, who secured his first GP2 win. Giedo Van der Garde takes third.

F1: Stewards considered excluding Pastor Maldonado says Nigel Mansell

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

Barcelona winner Pastor Maldonado has gone from F1 glory to back-of-the-field ignominy in the space of less than two weeks.

But as Germany's Auto Motor und Sport reports, the Venezuelan - who last time out in Spain broke through with Williams' first win in seven years - is lucky to be on Sunday's grid at all.

The FIA stewards, including 1992 world champion Nigel Mansell, imposed a severe ten-place grid penalty after ruling that the 27-year-old deliberately swerved into Sergio Perez during practice.

Maldonado insists the crash was not revenge but simply a driving mistake on a slippery track.

Team shareholder Toto Wolff even confronted Mansell about the apparent harshness of the penalty, to which Mansell reportedly replied: "Be happy that he's even racing.

"We were close to excluding him for the whole event," the former Williams driver reportedly told Wolff.

The final misery for Maldonado, who actually qualified ninth, is yet another grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change, as the result of damage following his post-Perez collision crash.

He lined up 24th and last.

F1: Fast Schumacher can stay ”forever” – Ross Brawn

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

More than 2000 days after his last pole, Michael Schumacher's qualifying triumph in Monaco has turned the speculation on its head.

Now, his critics have been silenced, and the pundits are having to consider the rising prospect of an even further extended tenure for the sport's elder statesman.

So it was with a smile that the great German batted away what must be a heartening round of new rumours.

"You imagine that just because of one result I've done at this moment I'm suddenly restarting or opening a different subject? No, that's not the case," he insisted.

Team boss Ross Brawn, however, swung the door open.

"If Michael keeps going like this then he can be with us forever," the delighted Briton enthused to Auto Motor und Sport, having admitted to shedding a tear at Saturday's result.

Germany's Bild newspaper said the "old Schumi" is back.

"We always believed in Michael," Mercedes' Norbert Haug is quoted as saying. "We knew that he was still on it."

As for the forthcoming talks about a new deal for the 43-year-old, Haug is quoted by Welt newspaper: "We are in no hurry."

Referring to the 2013 driver market, he added: "It's like a chess game -- when there's movement, you have to follow."

New deal or not, Schumacher's pole triumph - even though a penalty dating back to Barcelona means actually started the race sixth - was popular in the paddock.

"I feel bad for Michael that he can't enjoy his first pole after so long," Fernando Alonso told Spanish television Antena 3.

It is Mark Webber who inherited the pole, but the Australian insisted: "I think it's Michael's day."

Lewis Hamilton added: "Michael did a really great job. Not bad for an old timer!"

Heikki Kovalainen is quoted by Turun Sanomat: "This was Michael saying 'Hey, don't forget me and here I come!'"

In the Times newspaper, Kevin Eason concluded: "The day belonged to the old man."
