F1: Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel deny seat swap rumour

From GMM

Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel on Thursday batted away the most recent 'silly season' speculation.

Earlier this week, Italy's Sky had triggered rumours the Ferrari and Red Bull drivers could be about to complete a sensational cockpit swap for 2015.

Spaniard Alonso said the fact the speculation originated in Italy, where fabled Italy is based, is "sad".

"Sometimes it's sad when it comes from Italy and they create for some strange purpose these rumours, which are not helping Ferrari," he said in Singapore.

Earlier, Vettel had immediately denied the speculation, and he repeated the news on Thursday.

"As I've often tried to explain, I drive for Red Bull," said the reigning world champion.

"I have a contract, it has not changed," Vettel was quoted by the German news agency SID.

Not only that, the German says he has a "very special" bond with his energy drink-making employer as the partnership dates back "since I was twelve".

"Since I have worn the Red Bull helmet," Vettel added.

"I have a very, very strong connection to Red Bull and nothing has changed -- and it does not look as though anything will change."

F1: Sergio Marchionne’s attitude is ”positive” for Ferrari

From GMM

An F1 pundit thinks long-time president Luca di Montezemolo's departure is good news for Ferrari.

Marc Surer, a Swiss former grand prix driver, thinks the early noises being made by Montezemolo's successor Sergio Marchionne are honest and positive.

"In the short term, nothing will change," Surer, now a pundit on German television, told Speed Week.

"But long term, the change should have a positive impact.

"Montezemolo has usually protected the team and rather attacked the regulations if things were not going well on a sporting level," he explained.

"The engine - the sacred cow at Ferrari - was never questioned," said Surer.

"But Sergio Marchionne has already criticised not only the engine department but also admitted that energy recovery is also not good enough," he added.

2015 Porsche Cayman GTS & Boxster GTS First Impression

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
Put the central masses -- the engine, occupants and fuel -- in the middle of a car, and you lay the foundation for a machine that's more responsive, agile, and stable at high speeds, than one with the heavy stuff concentrated at either end. Many of the world's fastest, best-handling cars are built around this design, with less weight on the front wheels for enhanced steering feel and urgency, and more mass in the middle to make the car less prone to oversteer or understeer and more prone to locking onto its line when pushed to the absolute limit.

Porsche has been building mid-engine cars for years. Most recently, it's the Cayman and Boxster that come readily to mind -- though even some 50 years ago, the 904 GTS was a historical mid-engine landmark.

GTS? Most recently, that special badge has been worn by especially athletic variants of the 911, Panamera, and Cayenne that cap the mainstream, naturally aspirated part of their respective model ranges, performance wise. And now, as it was back when that 904 GTS was around, Porsche is applying their GTS principle to mid-engine models once again with the new Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS.

What are the Porsche Boxster GTS and Porsche Cayman GTS?
The Boxster and Cayman are twins. They drive the same, have the same engine, weigh the same, ride the same suspension, stop with the same brakes and feature the same cabin, features and chassis. Difference? Boxster has a few less horsepower and a convertible roof, and the Cayman is a fixed-roof coupe with a hint more power. To drive, they're all but identical.

Transforming each into a GTS model works via a simple principle: add a little more power, a little more wheel and tire, and bundle it with the latest Porsche must-have performance tech as standard, and you've got the hottest Boxster and Cayman variants available. For GTS duty, both units get exclusive interior and exterior visual treatments and their own exclusive range of add-on options for customization.

Porsche Boxster GTS and Porsche Cayman GTS Prices and Specs
For a Boxster GTS or Cayman GTS, fully loaded with the sort of add-on go-fast tech optional in non-GTS models, pricing starts at $83,900 and $85,900, respectively. Good value is promised, as both machines bundle numerous go-fast features together at a big savings. You'd spend thousands more adding the bigger tires, wheels, PASM suspension system, Sports Exhaust with push-button bypass, and Sport Chrono package with launch control and dynamic transmission mounts to a standard Cayman or Boxster as individual options.

And you still wouldn't get the exclusive visuals, or the 15 horsepower boost applied to each car's 3.4L flat-6 engine, which pushes output to 330 and 340 horsepower, respectively. Look for a 6-speed manual or 7-speed PDK transmission available in each, depending on your tastes.

Driving the Porsche Boxster GTS and Porsche Cayman GTS on a circuit

Even standard Boxster and Cayman models feel carefully honed on a circuit, with braking performance expertly tuned to the power output, steering which feels expertly dialed in against the weight of the car and the stiffness of the suspension, and a package that's big on overall balance. No part of the performance experience overwhelms any other. Notably, the steering is quick and eager and playful, the chassis is delightfully sensitive to weight transfer and therefore easy to pitch and rotate with the throttle or brakes, and it all rewards smooth and gentle inputs, which contributes to a high-speed experience that's not exhausting or tiresome, lap after lap.

Step up to the GTS-level machines, and you'll find the added power delivered alongside a huge increase in engine volume with the standard Sports Exhaust, and the little added width in the tires turning in a lot more overall grip, optimized further by the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system which takes active control of suspension and body movements to keep things even more stable.

There's a downshift auto rev-matching function included with the manual transmission, and a new Torque Vectoring system that helps pitch the rear of the car into bends with inner-wheel braking and overdriving of the outside drive wheel.

In GTS grade, then, Cayman and Boxster offer more grip and agility, do much more for their driver, and still deliver the trademark mid-engine driving feel, but in higher quantities and with higher limits. And all the while, they feel remarkably dialed-in, tuned, calibrated, and carefully set up.

All skill levels are covered here. In the GTS models, more novice drivers can expect to feel fully backed-up and supported for spirited or closed-course driving, and able to access plenty of the machine's capability from the get go. Suspension, stability control, transmission, and throttle operation can be toggled between various modes to match the course, intention or skill level at play -- meaning experienced drivers will feel right at home, too. This is a good thing, as ultimately shoppers planning to participate in motorsports activities will experience the highest return on their investment in the performance services of the new GTS machines.

Inside and Out of the Porsche Boxster GTS and Porsche Cayman GTS
Both GTS-grade units feature special badging, unique colour and wheel schemes, unique front bumpers, and upgraded interior treatments with colored panels for additional depth and contrast. Each machine is still instantly recognizable, though slightly sharper, more dynamic and more alert-looking.

Comparing the Porsche Boxster GTS and Porsche Cayman GTS
Given performance, pedigree, and pricing, potential Porsche Boxster GTS and Porsche Cayman GTS shoppers are also advised to investigate the Corvette Stingray, Jaguar F-Type and BMW M4 Coupe/Cabriolet.

F1: Carlos Sainz Jr ”very upset” with Max Verstappen signing

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
From GMM

Carlos Sainz jr's famous father has expressed disappointment with Red Bull's decision-making in 2014.

Earlier, 20-year-old Spaniard Sainz jr was regarded as the undoubted cream of the energy drink's driver development programme, and therefore the favourite to make his F1 debut in 2015 with Toro Rosso.

But as Mercedes toyed with signing up the teen sensation Max Verstappen to its own new junior programme, Red Bull's Dr Helmut Marko swept the Dutchman off his feet with a hard-to-refuse multi-year contract and an immediate F1 debut next year.

Many paddock regulars, including none other than Fernando Alonso, have expressed surprise that Sainz jr was shuffled down the queue in deference to Verstappen.

Sainz's father, the world rally legend Carlos Sainz, is quoted by Italy's Omnicorse: "We were very upset, but we have not lost heart."

Indeed, it has emerged that, in the wake of the Verstappen signing, the Sainz duo met with Marko and were assured the young Spaniard remains in Red Bull's plans.

Sainz snr is optimistic.

"Red Bull has never won with its driver in the Renault World Series and so it would be amazing if, in the year that happens, the new champion should be left on his feet," he said.

In that highly-respected formative series, Sainz jr currently leads Roberto Merhi with two rounds left to run.

Top 10: Used cars for teens

Stay connected Subscribe to our RSS feed
My first car -- the one that took me to high school -- was a 1985 Mazda 626 LX coupe. I bought it in 1993 for a mere $500. I subsequently dropped well over three times that much on an audio system for the thing, but that's not the point.

My gently used 8-year-old clunker took me to-and-fro school every day without problem; it required gas every now and then and the occasional tightening of trim panel screws because the base would eventually get the best of them.

Point is, a good used car is a highly viable alternative to a new car to get to school and to work. My suggestions are as follows:

10 - Hyundai Sonata
Compared to most of the cars on this list, the Sonata is a larger car and thus is roomier and offers a slightly smoother ride. Retail prices are usually very reasonable, so basically you're getting a midsize car for the price of a compact.

F1: Sergio Perez very close to new Force India deal

Mexican Formula 1 driver Sergio Perez says he is “very close to committing” to Force India Formula 1 team for 2015.

However, he admits anything could happen until the deal is signed.

In the FIA press conference Thursday in Singapore, Perez declared: “I think we should be very close to committing to next year with the team, but you never know and I have experience in the past so you never know what is going to happen.”

Perez feels Sahara Force India can move ahead of McLaren this weekend in the constructors' standings in the battle for 5th place.

“We are really optimistic for this weekend,” he continued.

“We have a good upgrade package and definitely our target is the McLarens which we are fighting really close and hopefully we can score more points than them this weekend with both cars and hopefully the upgrade package will give us some boost,” he added.

McLaren is currently 5th in the standings with 110 points, one more than Sahara Force India. Mercedes V6 power units power the cars of both teams.
